A very strong case could be made that Thompson stepped into the NBA as the best defender on a team. As of Wednesday, Thompson ranked seventh in the entire league in total rebounds. The six names above him were all centers. His 17 steals ranks him 32nd in the NBA. The most absurd stat of them all is this: Thompson has 26 blocks in 15 games, which ranks him sixth in the NBA. It gets crazier. Of those 26 blocks, 10 have come with his left hand.
“Really?” Thompson said when presented with that research. “I’m not secretly left-handed. There are things I can improve on with my left hand, but there are things I’m confident in doing with my left hand. I’m confident passing with my left hand, dunking … blocking shots.”
