DAL: The Mavericks are ascendant thanks to their approach to building around an all-time talent
Brent Brooks, Mavs Moneyball
The current front office is decisive, agile, and creative. The middle of the roster is prioritized and upgraded when possible, they enter key moments such as draft night and free agency with contingency plans, and they are not swinging for the fences with every move.
Swinging for the big fish that never comes and developing undrafted free agents seemed like an endless cycle. That cycle is broken because the Mavericks now have a front office that has the talent and vision to build a consistent contender and perhaps, a champion.
…(T)he Mavericks are poised to make one deep playoff run after another because of their ability to build their roster has gone from inconsistent and circumspect to near flawless.
The culmination of this cascade effect led Klay Thompson to watch the NBA Finals as he quietly shopped for a new home and realized he could be the missing piece that puts Dallas back on the biggest stage and potentially win it all.
Hats off to Nico Harrison and his team. It all dovetails, it all cascades upward, and it’s a beautiful thing to watch.

His job is to make everybody better, and to make the game easy. And his skill set maps neatly onto that job description. PG is a remarkably well-rounded player. He’s a high-level shooter and a willing, versatile defender. He’s a player you can use on either end of a pick and roll, and who can act as both the tagger and the back line help against ball screens on defense. Because of his combination of size, length, strength, and agility, he can guard pretty much anyone and he can leverage his size by posting players on the other end of the floor.
He can be the guy you run your offense through. We saw that in Indiana, and at times in Oklahoma City, and often in Los Angeles. But he’s better when he’s not that guy. He’s better when he’s playing off that guy and when making things happen against rotating defenses when that guy passes to him out of the post or a pick and roll.
