HONORING HUBIE BROWN
There Could Only Be One Hubie Brown
Ray Ratto, The Defector
It would be wrong to say that Hubie Brown deserved a better sendoff than Bucks 135, Sixers 127 on Super Bowl Sunday because Hubie Brown was perfect for Bucks 135, Sixers 127. He would have bunny-hopped across an eight-lane highway for Bucks 135, Sixers 127 because for him—the last true basketball lifer—it wasn't the 135 or the 127 that moved him. It was the Bucks and Sixers part, and it would have been the same had he been given Pistons 112, Hornets 102, or Rockets 94, Raptors 87, or even anything involving the freshly re-deadified Wizards. Hubie was there unapologetically for The Game before him and only The Game before him. If you would have preferred Raptors-Rockets because it featured 81 points of better defense, you would have been wrong because every games was equal in his eyes— a chance to explain what was before him to people wanting to learn.

Then, the third bit of maddening injury news concerns a familiar face in this space. Joel Embiid still isn’t healthy. Even though he’s been back for a couple games, he told ABC’s Lisa Salters during Sunday’s telecast that he might need another knee surgery and a long recovery to get right. This is something we’ve been awaiting clarity on, since Embiid has barely played so far. And the Philadelphia 76ers (20-32) might need to bite the bullet when it comes to this season. They are holding onto some hope that the gang will get healthy when it’s time for the playoffs. It just doesn’t seem feasible. Embiid hurt his knee (again) about a year ago and seemed to rush his way back onto the court for the end of that season. The 2022-23 MVP had some heroic moments in their brief playoff appearance but never looked remotely healthy.
